How To Do Acrylic Nails

Here’s a step-by-step guide to applying acrylic nails at home, including tools, safety tips, and techniques for a salon-quality finish:

Tools & Materials Needed

  • Acrylic liquid (monomer) and acrylic powder (polymer)
  • Nail tips or nail forms (for extensions)
  • Nail primer (bonding agent)
  • Acrylic brush (synthetic, size #8–#12)
  • Nail file (100/180 grit) and buffer
  • Cuticle pusher, nippers, and nail cleanser
  • Nail glue (if using tips)
  • UV/LED lamp (optional, for gel top coat)

Prep Natural Nails

  1. Sanitize hands with soap and water.
  2. Trim and shape nails to a short length.
  3. Push back cuticles gently with a cuticle pusher.
  4. Buff the nail surface lightly to remove shine (this helps acrylic adhere).
  5. Clean nails with non-acetone remover to remove oils.

Apply Nail Tips or Forms

Option A: Nail Tips

  1. Size the tip to match each nail. Trim if needed.
  2. Apply nail glue to the tip’s edge and press onto your natural nail. Hold for 10 seconds.
  3. Trim and shape the tip to desired length with clippers.
  4. File the seam between the natural nail and tip to smooth it.

Option B: Nail Forms

  1. Slide the form under your natural nail, adjusting it to create a curved extension guide.
  2. Secure the form tightly to prevent acrylic from leaking underneath.

Apply Primer

Use a non-acid primer to dehydrate the nail and improve adhesion. Apply a thin layer and let it dry (30 seconds).

Mix & Apply Acrylic

  1. Dip the brush into the monomer liquid, then wipe excess on the bottle’s rim.
  2. Pick up a bead of acrylic powder (ratio: 2 parts liquid to 1 part powder).
    • The bead should be smooth, not too wet or crumbly.
  3. Place the bead near the cuticle and press/spread it toward the tip.
    • Work in sections: cuticle → middle → tip.
  4. Shape the acrylic with the brush while it’s still wet:
    • Create a smooth “apex” (curve) for strength.
    • Avoid touching cuticles or skin to prevent lifting.
  5. Repeat for all nails.

File & Shape

  1. Let acrylic harden completely (~10–15 minutes).
  2. File the surface with a 180-grit file to smooth bumps and perfect shape.
  3. Buff nails to a glossy finish (if not applying polish).

Finish with Polish

  1. Apply base coat to protect the acrylic.
  2. Add color (regular or gel polish). For gel, cure under a UV/LED lamp.
  3. Seal with top coat for shine and durability.

Pro Tips for Success

  • Work in a ventilated area (acrylic fumes are strong).
  • Practice the bead consistency on paper before applying to nails.
  • Avoid MMA monomer (use EMA-based products—safer and less brittle).
  • Keep the brush clean by wiping with monomer after each use.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Over-filing natural nails (weakens them).
  • Skipping primer (causes lifting).
  • Applying acrylic too thick (leads to heat spikes and cracks).

Acrylic Nail Aftercare

Moisturize cuticles daily with oil to prevent dryness.

  • Avoid water exposure for 2 hours after application.
  • Get fills every 2–3 weeks as your natural nails grow.

With practice, you’ll master the technique! Start with 1–2 nails to build confidence.
